Burlap: Properties and Applications

Burlap is a strong, breathable, and wear-resistant fabric made from natural coarse fibers such as jute, flax, hemp, and kenaf. Thanks to its simple plain-weave structure, burlap is affordable to produce while offering high durability and ventilation.

Originally used for making sacks, burlap is now widely applied in packaging, soft containers, protective clothing, filtration, and decorative items. Its key advantages include breathability, moisture resistance, low static charge, and eco-friendliness.

The fabric’s density determines its use. Burlap under 220 g/m² is suitable for technical applications. At around 250 g/m², it can be used for disposable bags and protective workwear that shields against sparks and abrasion. Heavier fabric—300–400 g/m²—is ideal for furniture upholstery and demanding industrial environments.

Burlap is biodegradable, resistant to rot, and maintains its strength over time, making it a cost-effective and sustainable material choice.
